DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Dennison, Howard & Davis, 7J, 18S, gold-filled G.W. Ladd HC recase, white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#4058. A historically important watch, the "Dennison, Howard & Davis" grade was produced by Waltham's predecessor the Boston Watch Co. between approximately 1854 and 1857. This 7 jewel version is significantly scarcer than the 15 jewel version, with Ron Price's survey of observed examples in "Origins of the Model 57" listing 32 recorded observations of 7 jewel examples versus 178 recorded observations of 15 jewel.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, darkened plate tone, barrel bridge with concentric rub marks to area right of winding arbor escutcheon, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere, balance wheel with mild oxide spotting; flawless dial; fine hands with some areas of mild finish loss, slight bend to seconds-hand; case shows light to medium wear, crease-type dents to left perimeter of front and upper-right perimeter of front, some additional mild dents and dings scattered to front, rear and cuvette, reduced engine turning detail with full loss through much of front and rear shoulders, spot of wear to brass to band, wear to brass to high points of band knurling, some small slivers of wear to brass at edges of front and rear, case front opens wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 110 degrees); brassy bow pivots freely and with some play within pendant sockets, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
